Title: Math for All Seasons
Written by: Greg Tang
Illustrated by: Harry Briggs
Commmon Core Standards Addressed:
PK.CC 3.a - When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
PK.CC 3.b - Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
PK.CC 3.c. Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
K.CC 3. - Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
K.CC 4.a - When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Summary: This book uses different poems to help children create ways to count by grouping objects by two’s, three’s or five’s and sometimes subtracting. The poems include weather, and things you see during the different seasons throughout the year.
Rating: **** I give this book a good rating because it covers a lot of counting concepts. It is colorful and it makes children think about different ways to count. It also explains the answers in the back of the book.
Classroom ideas: You can either read the book and just count the objects with children, or have them count the objects themselves using one to one correspondence. You could also use one or two poems per lesson depending on the concept you are covering. I would definitely hand out manipulatives (unifix cubes) for counting and grouping. Students could be given ten cubes and show how they would group them for counting and then share their way with the class. I would also use manipualtives to have them group their cubes into two’s, three’s and five’s.
